HI!
WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE!
COME ON IN AND BROWSE
Each of my books for young readers (and the young at heart!) reflects my interest in our natural world. You'll see that I've written several biographies about people who have helped improve our environmental awareness, including John Muir and Rachel Carson. I also enjoy being a "science detective." It is fun to learn about animals, where they live, and why. And then I put my favorite animals in my books. As a California native, I often write about my state and western American history, especially young pioneers who traveled west by covered wagon.
When I'm not working in my office, I often like to garden or head to the hills behind my house. I take my "writing buddies," Willa and Scout (my golden retrievers), and carry a pair of binoculars. While I hike, I like to think about my books. Sometimes I go further and visit our national parks. Many of my ideas come together after one of these "explores."
I'm involved in therapy dog programs at our local library and at Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF). Willa and Scout, trained therapy dogs, have kids read to them at the library's"Paws to Read" sessions and at ARF. These programs help children improve their reading skills while they learn about dogs. With me, Scout and Willa also visit Alzheimer patients, schools, and participant in other outreach events in our area. Working with emerging readers is an awesome extension of being a writer.
Click on the LINKS to the left to learn more about me and about my books. I've included activities and links for kids, plus tips for teachers and librarians section for most books.
Be sure to come back often, as I will always be updating and adding, and generally coming up with great stuff for you to discover! I'm trying to make my site interactive and will look forward to your feedback.

ENJOY!
