TIPS FOR TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS:
Along the Santa Fe
Trail: Marion Russell's Own Story
- Study new words such as: adobe, baille, cholera,
prairie, dashboard, running gear, and buffalo wallows.
- Compare and contrast travel now and in 1852.
- Talk about the relations between Native Americans and
settlers.
- Discuss the influence of Spanish and Mexican culture
in the southwest.
- Write a list of things to bring in a covered wagon,
such as flour, dried fruit, seeds, tools, and medicines.
- Have students write a journal (or an entry) as though
they are on Marion's trip.
- Have students draw a picture of their favorite place
along the Santa Fe Trail.
