TIPS FOR TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS:

Along the Santa Fe Trail: Marion Russell's Own Story

  • Study new words such as: adobe, baille, cholera, prairie, dashboard, running gear, and buffalo wallows.
  • Compare and contrast travel now and in 1852.
  • Talk about the relations between Native Americans and settlers.
  • Discuss the influence of Spanish and Mexican culture in the southwest.
  • Write a list of things to bring in a covered wagon, such as flour, dried fruit, seeds, tools, and medicines.
  • Have students write a journal (or an entry) as though they are on Marion's trip.
  • Have students draw a picture of their favorite place along the Santa Fe Trail.
