ABOUT
THIS BOOK:
Anyone who has ever
visited one of the national parks in the United States knows of the beauty
and grandeur of the American wilderness. Because of the influence of John
Muir, these places still exist.
A self-taught botanist
and geologist, Muir explored much of North America on foot, and in the
late 19th century began writing about what he saw. His writings were
instrumental in the creation of our national park system as well as the
Sierra Club.
"The Mountains are calling me and I
must go." JOHN MUIR

ACTIVITIES
AND
LINKS
FOR
KIDS:
- Study websites for Yosemite
National Park and then start planning a family vacation to this
spectacular national treasure in California. You can
"research" as I did while hiking, looking at waterfalls, and
observing wildlife!
- In Martinez, California, visit Muir's
home. Click here to
discover the various activities and events for young people at this
National Historic Site. It's a special place and I've been there
numerous times.
- Read Stickeen: John Muir and the
Brave Little Dog (Dawn
Publications) a terrific 32 page retelling of Muir's famous dog
adventure story by my friend, Donnell Rubay.
- Take a hike in Muir Woods in Marin
County, California or check out Muir
Woods on the internet.
- John Muir liked to travel and went to
South America, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and many other
places. Share with us what you've discovered in the wild places around
the world. E-mail me and I'll post your response on the KID
TALK page of my website.
